Concerned about your Spouse or Partner’s Gaming?
Dear Spouse or Partner,
You are here because you feel powerless over your partner’s gaming and the negative impact it is having on you and your family. It feels like gaming has taken over your spouse or partner’s life, and you’ve become just an after thought.
Maybe you’ve said to yourself, “I don’t even recognize this person anymore.” Or have asked yourself, “Why don’t they realize they have a problem?” In addition to neglecting or ignoring you, they might be doing the same with their parental and/or professional responsibilities, leaving everything falling squarely on your shoulders.
You’ve begged. You’ve pleaded. And perhaps you’ve threatened to leave… but so far nothing has worked. You feel trapped and alone, but you’ve come to the right place. At Game Quitters we have a deep understanding of video game addiction, as well as how it impacts families and relationships. We know the pain, frustration and hopelessness that goes with being in your situation. We are here to help.
If you have been seeing the following red flags for some time, it’s not just a phase. You are seeing a repeated pattern of behavior that is telling you something is wrong.
Being irritable or moody when they can’t play
Constantly needing to play more and more (“it’s never enough”)
Losing interest in other activities (e.g. date night, exercise)
Being deceptive (e.g. spending money to buy things in-game)
Jeopardizing school, work, and/or relationships (in order to game)
If you are reading this and realizing your spouse or partner is at-risk or worse, has a problem, then we are here to support you. There are specific steps you can take to prevent an even bigger problem.
Reconnect with your Partner with Personal Support
Reconnect was developed in partnership with Nadja Streiter, a licensed therapist and specialist in video game addiction. She brings a therapeutic foundation that works to tackle underlying issues while teaching concrete skills necessary for parents to achieve their goals.
“My partner was an avid gamer for over 10years until gaming started to impact his work and home life. With the help of Game Quitters, he was able to successfully detox for 90days and hasn’t returned to gaming. As his partner, I reached out to game quitters during the start of his detox to get professional assistance to ensure I was doing everything I could to support myself as well as learn how to support my partner during this difficult time in our lives. It was important for me that he didn’t feel like he was alone in this and was fully supported. Nadja helped me work through various exercises, realize a tremendous amount about myself, and ultimately helped me become a more supportive partner.” –Monique
